What is bleed?
Bleed is extra artwork extending beyond the trim edge — typically 3mm all sides. Printers cut to the finished size, and slight variation in cut position means artwork without bleed can show a white edge. Always extend background colours and images to the bleed edge.
What is the safe zone?
The safe zone (also called the quiet zone or live area) is the area inside the trim edge where all important content — text, logos, contact details — should stay. Keep at least 3mm from the trim edge on all sides.
Canva setup
In Canva, set your document size to the bleed size (e.g. 96×61mm for a business card). Enable "Show print bleed" and "Crop marks and bleed" on PDF Print export. Keep all important content 3mm from the trim guides.
Illustrator / InDesign
Set your artboard/page to the finished size. Set document bleed to 3mm in Document Setup. Create a safe zone guide 3mm inside the trim. Export as PDF with marks and bleeds checked.
