Why check the middle of a blend?

The heaviest ink in a two-colour gradient is often somewhere in the middle, not at either end. Both of your stops can sit safely under the limit while the halfway point goes over it, so the whole ramp is measured here rather than just the stops.

What causes banding

A press can only step through so many shades of an ink. Stretch a small tint change over a long distance and each step becomes wide enough to see as a stripe. Short blends with a big colour change are safe; long blends with a subtle change are where it shows.

Fading out to nothing

Very light tints below roughly 3% do not hold on press — the dots are too small and drop out. A gradient fading to near-white can end in a visible edge rather than a smooth fade. Either finish at bare paper or stay above about 5%.

Gradients into black

Rich black mixes other inks in with the black for depth. Blending from a colour into rich black is smooth; blending into pure K only can look flat and shift where the other inks stop. Keep the build consistent along the ramp.
