Code 128
The most versatile barcode — supports all 128 ASCII characters including letters, numbers, and symbols. Used for product packaging, shipping labels, and internal inventory. No fixed length requirement.
Code 39
Older standard supporting uppercase letters, numbers, and a few special characters. Widely used in automotive and defence industries. Simpler than Code 128 but produces wider barcodes.
EAN-13 / EAN-8
EAN-13 (13 digits) is the standard for retail product barcodes used outside North America — including Australian supermarkets. EAN-8 (8 digits) is a shorter version for small products. Requires a registered GS1 number for retail use.
UPC-A
The North American retail barcode standard — 12 digits. Used on products sold in US and Canadian retail stores. Like EAN-13, requires a GS1-registered company prefix for commercial use. Scannable by the same readers as EAN-13.
