What is the difference between Embossed and Debossed business cards?
Embossed and debossed business cards both involve altering the surface of the card to create a tactile effect, but they achieve different results: Embossed Business Cards:

  • Embossing involves raising the design or text above the surface of the card.
  • This is typically done by pressing the paper from the back side, pushing the desired design outward.
  • Embossed areas are raised and stand out from the rest of the card, creating a three-dimensional effect.
  • Embossing adds a sense of elegance and sophistication to the card.

Debossed Business Cards:

  • Debossing, on the other hand, involves pressing the design or text into the surface of the card.
  • This process creates an indentation or recessed area where the design or text is located.
  • Debossed areas are lower than the surrounding surface of the card, creating a sunken effect.
  • Debossing can also add a sense of luxury and professionalism to the card, and it tends to be more subtle than embossing.

In summary, while both embossed and debossed business cards offer a tactile and visually appealing element, embossing raises the design above the surface, while debossing presses the design into the surface. The choice between the two techniques often depends on the desired aesthetic and the overall branding goals of the business.

The Difference:

Discussing Embossing and Debossing is a common conversation we have with clients. Both terms are often confused and choosing the wrong finishing will result in very different outcome.

Embossing

Embossing is made by two metal plates. The plates are placed on either side of the card and pressed together. Artwork from the back is pushed into the card (leaving an indentation) and extrudes through to the front of the card.

Debossing

is made by a single metal plate. The plate is placed on the side of the artwork and pressed in leaving an indentation. The back of the card is not affected (in some cases a slight ‘pressure mark’ may be visible under certain light). Note debossing can only be done on certain thicker stocks and is subject to artwork approval. In some instances, large coverage with debossing does not work well as more pressure is required which can result in the back of the card having heavier pressure marks.

Blind Embossing and debossing

This is essentially not using a different print colour in the area that will be embossed / debossed. Generally, we recommend this as contrast can hide the embellishing effect. Creating a card that is ‘not blind’ means the card is printed, then the embossing or debossing is applied. In some cases there can be slight misalignment between the processes.

Cards can either done cheap, or well. If you care about your business presenting the right message, think about the benefits of a specialised card. They show you care, and they that won’t be thrown straight in the bin. A good card starts with good stock, yet the stock is the biggest contributing factor to the cost. This is why we supply a second-to-none range of card options to suite most budgets. Call us to discuss how a design can be enhanced by using embossing or debossing

It adds an interactive element to your card, turning a simple piece of paper into a gateway to your digital presence.

  1. Instant Access to Information: QR codes allow clients to instantly access your website, portfolio, LinkedIn profile, or other resources by simply scanning with their phones, making it easier to learn more about you or your business.

FAQs.

What is the difference between Embossing and Debossing?

Embossing is made by two metal plates. The plates are placed on either side of the card and pressed together. Artwork from the back is pushed into the card (leaving an indentation) and extrudes through to the front of the card.
Debossing is made by a single metal plate. The plate is placed on the side of the artwork and pressed in leaving an indentation. The back of the card is not affected (in some cases a slight ‘pressure mark’ may be visible under certain light). Note debossing can only be done on certain thicker stocks and is subject to artwork approval.
See more info here

How thick are Embossed business cards / foil business cards?

Our cards with embossing are professionally offset printed on quality a range of quality card stock. Please see other tab for full range of stock options and thichness in millimeters.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. Usually this relates to card thickness, however this comes down to the card stock density. For example, it is possible to have 450gsm card being thicker than a 600 GSM card. As there is some misconception regarding this, we use a micrometer on all of our products to be able to advise the thickness in millimeters.

How will my artwork look when Embossed?

The reason we have been in business so long is we have specialised in business cards with print finishing. We provide free consultation to go over your artwork to advise and give our recommendations. We advise of what works and what does not before you make a purchasing commitment.

What size options are available for Embossed business cards?

The business cards standard size range between 90 x 53mm and 90 x 55mm. We can make the cards any size within 90 x 55mm.

Do you offer rounded corners?

Yes, we offer rounded corners and an awesome range of diecut shapes.

Can we add add additional print finishing such as Foil or spot UV ?

Short answer = yes. Please get in contact and we will happily advise of the options and provide quick pricing over the phone or via email. It is always best if you can provide sample artwork.

What’s the reason for so many artwork requirements?

Hands down, if you want quality, it starts with quality artwork. Many people do not consider how colour on screen translates to ink on paper. Rich Black is the perfect example. Using too much CMY with K can cause a muddy brown result. This is because there is simply too much ink going onto the card. The different card products we offer use different CMYK values to create the best rich black for the specific card.

Print finishing artwork need to be ‘vector’ / editable. This is because elements need to be modified to ensure a great result. In the instance of foil stamping or embossing, a metal block needs to me made. It is impossible to do this from pixel based artwork. Please do not send PNG or JPG files. These type of file formats are pixel based and not editable. Further details are provided in the ‘artwork’ tab.

How do I supply artwork?

When you submit your PDF, it should contain different pages for each process. For example, page 1 is the front print. The second page is the front finishing (in this case Embossed). This page needs to use editable / vector artwork. The third page is a ‘sample’. It is not necessarily required but recommended to indicate how the combined Embossed and front print look. This can also show misalignment of the different pages (if you copy paste correctly). The last page is the back print. More information about this process can be found in the ‘artwork’ tab
